TRANCE: Rebound- Mat Zo & Arty (http://bit.ly/g6dgeR)
Like I mentioned earlier, I think Mat Zo is the unsung hero of Trance and EDM as a whole this year. His teamwork with Arty is remarkably consistent for both of them being so young, Mat Zo- 21 and Arty- 22. This one has a strong buildup to a peaceful break that highlights the beautiful chords used throughout the remainder of the song. They add a synth loop over the chords similar to Gareth Emery’s style for the icing on the cake. Ahhhhh…
PROGRESSIVE HOUSE: Slumber- Steve Forte Rio ft. Lindsey Ray (http://bit.ly/rsm58o)
Even before I found out this was, in fact, a track by Tiesto (Steve Forte Rio can be rearranged to Tiesto Forever!), I was completely in love. Everything about this song is perfect: the lyrics, the vocal harmonies, the progressive beat, and the “bridge” (around 4:00) that is classic Tiesto. It was definitely my song of the summer :) Be sure to listen through until the very end as the fade out is wonderful and could be reworked into a tune on its own.
ELECTRO HOUSE: Bassive- Felguk (http://bit.ly/w0rHyn)
2011 was most definitely a breakout year for the Brazilian duo, Felguk. Their filthy electro style was an instant hit to me and anyone who enjoys the likes of Wolfgang, Mord, Feed Me, etc. This track shows no mercy from the very beginning. The synth layer almost sounds as if it’s speaking to you and the intermittent “BASS” thrown at you commands you to dance.
DUBSTEP/DNB: All Fall Down- Camo & Krooked (http://bit.ly/rNuTph)
Not only did my jaw hit the floor when I saw that Camo & Krooked was going to be at Ultra this year, and not only am I totally in love with the boys from Vienna, this song is pretty dope, too. The drop is a little unexpected and more melodious than your average dubstep tune. The vibrato on the melody throughout the song is another unique element to this song that I just love. In fact, this entire album is incredible… be sure to check out Cross The Line (and their free Christmas EP that I recently posted!)
HOUSE: Bounce- Calvin Harris (http://bit.ly/mSzr1c)
You just can’t dislike this song, I don’t care what you say. It’s so catchy and fun and Kelis’ vocals are perfect. Once again, Calvin has given us one of his signature bass lines that’s uber creative as it works off the melody. The video is amazing, but definitely could have used some more of Calvin’s sexy face in it, in my opinion.
REMIX: Teenage Crime- Adrian Lux (Axwell & Henrik B Remode) (http://bit.ly/aer2zX)
Amazing as this remix is when included in awesome sets, I think I fell out of my chair when I heard the entire things all the way through. Axwell and Henrik B do an amazing job of integrating the highs and lows of the songs by incorporating snippets of the lyrics in between the drops. Together, the mysterious lyrics and the progressive build-up with its pounding piano, and then later, organ chords makes for an unforgettable track.
