When’s the last time you listened to a song that had a bass drop so low that it made your ass shake while seated?
Throwback. But this one is too fine to not keeping having playing time!
Coming off an amazing performance at Hangout Festival, Paul Oakenfold sure has his hands full with some well done remixes for his track “Surrender.” I’m going with the Traydkraft remix as my top pick because of its juxtaposition of charging drums, bouncy synth lines, and slow moving, dubby laser stabs.
It’s been a long time coming for me to see YACHT. I missed them last time they were in Atlanta and a tragic (maybe that’s too intense of a word as no one/nothing was injured except my soul) Mexican airplane malfunction kept them from joining the schedule at Moogfest back in October, but THIS MONDAY (June 4th) at The Earl, we shall finally meet (well, kinda). Can you tell I’m excited? I hope I’m passing along this excitement to you because you definitely need to grab your tickets prrrronto as this show will be YACHT-stonishing.
Check out their electrified version of Brigitte Fontaine’s 1969 song “Le Goudron” and don’t miss all the action that will be going down in East A-Town and get your tickets meow.
You’ve heard them team up with top names like Kaskade and Adrian Lux, but this summer the Swedish songstresses are about to storm the States solo. With a slew of DJ dates in the hottest spots like Miami, San Francisco, and Las Vegas, the duo will be warming us North Americans up for their debut album I Love You, Man (haha, rad fucking name), set to be released on Ultra Records on July 10th. Check out their brand new (and excellently edited) video for “Jane Doe.”
Watson is awesome. Follow dat shit.
If a free download of this Urban Knights remix doesn’t pique your interest, then the tangy, chilled-out jungle bass line will. Good bouncy track to get your Wednesday going.
First things first: long live the Queen!
Lots and lots of new things going on with Miss Napoleon, including the brand new video of “Poison.” Also, exclusively for IDentity Fest, Audrey Napoleon has shuffled together one hella tight house mix. Expect to hear the known and the unknown (but sadly no Three 6 Mafia- anyone get that?) as well as a couple of her new tracks that will be included on her forthcoming EP, Ornamental Egos, out July 24th. Best of all, this hour long mix is completely FREE!
Be sure to catch Audrey as she comes through with the IDentity Festival on Thursday, August 2nd at Aaron’s Lakewood Amphitheater. Tickets are going fast for this grand slam of a day-festival, so grab yours before it’s took late!

Along the sunny coastline of Alabama is the best kept secret among music lovers worldwide. It’s a place where artists from across the four corners of the globe come to gather on the sandy white beaches of Gulf Shores to vibe out in the sand and get a damn good lower body workout in doing so. Hangout Music Festival’s three day long spanse of music included anything and everything: New Orleans zydeco, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, Alabama-bred rappers, founders of electronic dance music, and blues rock guitarists all on one friendly shore.

From the second I woke up and looked outside the front windows of our condo onto West Beach Avenue, I knew this would be a special weekend. Where else do 1/3 of the festival goers casually pedal in on rusty Schwinn rentals from decades past? Where else do you get to walk out on a fluffly, white sand beach and get to listen to pop icons like Randy Newman? Where else do you get to ride a MegaDrop while listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers jam out? Not no where, not no how.
So I didn’t get a lot of pictures and I didn’t take any video, but if you’d like to pay for me to go to these festivals, let me know because I will be taking donations starting June 1st. And instead of boring you to tears with adjectives on how awesome my weekend was, I’ll just give you a run down of the festival highlights. Starting with Friday:
- Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light, Natty Light (at the same damn time)
- Sunscreen, glitter, and facepaint (though not necessarily in that order)
- Sand and sun!
- Alabama Shakes’in that azz
- Yelawolf

- OAKENFOLD
- Oakenwolf? Hmmm let’s sit down for a bit due to some time zone confusion and enjoy Wilco in the cool sand
- Waiting for STS9 with what appears to be a lost Jersey Shore juice head with neck muscles the size of a tree trunk screaming “SKRILLEX!” Uh, no broseph, this is STS9. Get your basslines correctified.
- Friendly hippie consoling me from “The Situation”
- JACK WHITE tent revival
- Walk home and lay outside raving about Jack White’s tent revival

The sun comes up Saturday and we do it all again, except with a different lineup:
- SAND! GLITTER! (sunscreen)
- SCHEDULE CHANGESSSSSSS! SKRILLEX AT 3!
- Deep breaths
- RANDY NEWMAN (knows no limits to what he sings about and it’s fantastic)

- Skrillex starts, I miss it… again for the 3rd festival straight, but for Gary Clark, Jr. ahmahgahd.
- Sunscreen
- I haz cheezgurger
- Dr. Dog
- Kaskade’s greatest hits (but it’s been yearsss since I’ve heard “Be Still”)
- String Cheese Incident
- String Cheese Incideeeeent (and vibing)
- SH H H H H HPONGLE!!! AHMAHGAAAAHHHHHD
- Mary Poppins Man
- CH H H H H HILI PEPPERS!!!
- Fireworks, do do doo doo do doooo
- Mary Poppins Man reprise

Sunday… and the sun’s still shining:
- We slept in and missed Big Freedia :(
- We slept in and missed Mavis Staples :((
- Finally got there to see Paper Diamond (which was surprisingly awesome- about 150% times louder and more awesome than he was at Ultra if you can believe it)
- Not to miss STEVE WINWOOD for the world
- But Steve didn’t play “Valerie” if you can believe it
- Zeds Dead and Omar Linx! (woulda, coulda, shoulda been as loud or louder than Paper Diamond)

- The Flaming Lips Part 1: The Hits, with friends, then alone, then with friends again
- The Flaming Lips Part 1: Dark Side of the Moon with about 10,000 friends
- Dave Matthews plays, but we choose to lay in the hammock grove instead
- Dave Matthews continues to play, but we choose to eat 10 pounds of ground beef nachos instead

And there you have it, folks. Hangout Music Festival 2012 was a complete success and a complete joy to be a part of. Despite missing Skrillex and despite missing the ladies of the century, Mavis Staples and Big Freedia, I had one of the best weekends ever, and got a killer tan to boot. Check out the rest of my pictures over on my Facebook page and don’t be shy, LIKE ME!
Next stop, Las Vegas…
Other than a phenomenal lineup, there’s a lot of special things happening in the Governor’s Ball camp. You’ve got Passion Pit’s first NYC show in 2 years, Duck Sauce’s first show ever in NYC, Kid Cudi’s first return to the Big Apple since his sold out gig last summer, Beck’s first show in NYC in 4 years, Modest Mouse’s first NYC show in 2 years, Fiona Apple’s first NYC show in support of her new record, plus tons of other great artists!
Check out this interview Passion Pit’s front man Michael Angelakos as he discusses what to expect from the new live show that they’ll be performing for the New York crowd plus more! You can grab your 2-day passes or single day passes here but don’t wait too long because a weekend like this is very high in demand. Oh, and Randall’s Island Park is always a fun place to get your groove on.
See you there New York! The A will be well represented!
Do a double take and you might think this one was made by Mad Decent’s main man, Diplo, but keep listening and you’ll hear the southern hip-hop and UK bass-influenced sounds of Baauer shine all on their own. Another two thumbs up for Mad Decent.
HAHA this is CLASSIC. Best comment: “He looks like a crocodile.” You’ve got to be dead if you don’t think this is hilarious. Thanks Michelle!
Memorial Day is wonderful for everyone: the beginning of summer, a day off from the 9-5 grind, having a four day week to follow. But what would make this once a year holiday even more golden? How’s about Thomas Gold’s debut compilation two-disc album hot off the press from Axtone Records (P.S. that’s Swedish House Mafia’s Axwell’s label)! After slamming the scene with the hit “Alive” with Dirty South, Thomas Gold has been working long and hard on producing more excellent follow tracks, including “Sing2Me” which hit #1 on Beatport’s over chart.
But don’t forget about Gold’s stellar remix portfolio. After much acclaim for remixes of top pop icons like Lady Gaga and Adele, he brings it home with a fantastic rework on Miike Snow’s “The Wave” which is exclusive to this new release.
The album is now available exclusively on iTunes but will be released on other digital channels on Monday, June 4th. Take a listen to the compilation minimix, but trust me that this one is worth it’s weight in, well you guessed it, GOLD. Be sure to get your tickets to see Thomas when he swings by Opera for a show on Friday, July 6th! Gonna be STELLAR!

The name pretty much says it all- solid trance-y, proggy house track from the Netherlands producer that spits out crazy energy. It’s a long weekend, folks; you need this one to rally through the Sunday night parties!
One of the freshest sounds in any group, any genre around is in the Asteroids Galaxy Tour. Just watch their new video for “Major” and you’ll hear what I’m saying. Blast off!
Check out the new video from Orlando Higginbottom, aka Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs for his new track “American Dream Part II.” He just announced his first full-length album will be released this summer on June 12th (that’s only 3 weeks away AH!) which is just in time for his US tour dates and Lollapalooza set! I’ve got totally enormous amounts of excitement for this one, guys.
